Ex-Kings guard Rondo officially retires after 16 NBA seasons
“Yes, I’m done. I can’t. I’d rather spend time with my kids,” said the 38-year-old Rondo when asked by host Matt Barnes if his NBA career was over.
Rondo had a distinguished career, being selected as an All-Star four times (2010-2013) and winning two NBA championships (2008, 2020). He last played in the NBA in 2022 with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Reflecting on his career, Rondo expressed gratitude for the experiences he had in the NBA. “What a time, it was definitely something that I never took for granted when I was in the game,” he said. “I loved every minute of it, and I appreciate the brotherhood that I was able to share and bond and grow with over the years.”
Throughout his career, Rondo was known for his defensive prowess and playmaking abilities. He averaged 9.8 points, 7.9 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game over 957 regular-season games. Rondo also earned All-Defensive Team honors four times and led the NBA in assists on three occasions.
Drafted 21st overall by the Phoenix Suns in 2006 and subsequently traded to the Boston Celtics, Rondo spent the first nine seasons of his career in Boston. He played a crucial role in the Celtics’ 2008 championship victory and emerged as an All-Star in 2010.
Following his tenure with the Celtics, Rondo had stints with several teams, including the Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans, Los Angeles Lakers, Atlanta Hawks, and Los Angeles Clippers. Notably, he won an NBA title with both the Celtics and the Lakers, becoming only the second player in history to achieve this feat.
Rondo’s last two seasons were marked by brief stints with multiple teams, including the Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers (for the second time), and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
As he steps away from the game, Rondo leaves behind a legacy of excellence and contributions to the sport of basketball.
