Elon Musk has dismissed claims that the recent UK riots were a “trial balloon for the US election,” mocking the accusations made by Carole Cadwalladr in The Guardian. The social unrest in Britain, which erupted ahead of the US election and four years after the Capitol riots in Washington, led to these assertions.
Notable disruptions were fueled by false reports circulating on X, spread by influential accounts like Andrew Tate and the recently reinstated Tommy Robinson. Musk himself had to remove a repost that falsely claimed detainment camps were being established in the Falkland Islands for those involved in the riots.
In her Guardian article, Cadwalladr emphasized the genuine risk of political violence in the US following the upcoming election, describing Musk’s actions as a “warning shot of what’s to come.” She highlighted that, while many social media platforms play a role in the rapid spread of misinformation, X is particularly responsible.
Cadwalladr remarked, “What Musk – the new self-appointed Lord of Misrule – has done is to rip off the mask. He’s shown that you don’t even have to pretend to care.”
“In Musk’s world, trust is mistrust and safety is censorship. His goal is chaos. And it’s coming.”
In response to the article, Musk labeled it as “comically unhinged,” stating it made him laugh out loud.
